On y entend de l’alto et du tuba. Dans un orchestre classique, ce sont des instruments souvent laissés pour compte. Est-ce que votre duo, devient alors un peu la revanche des plus forts ?(Elle rit) Avec Maëlle, on s’est rencontrées il y a trois ans, on a vite accroché. On a des parcours assez similaires, une éducation classique qui a viré vers le contemporain, la musique improvisée et le jazz. Du coup, je ne me considère pas vraiment comme jazzwoman. On est très attachées à ce mélange des genres. Effectivement, le tuba et l’alto, dans l’orchestre, c’est souvent une sorte de « liant » pour le reste des pupitres, surtout le tuba. Normalement, en classique, on n’est pas censé l’entendre, mais plutôt le remarquer lorsqu’il n’est pas là. Avec Maëlle, on a donc ce détachement face à la tradition purement classique, on a cet attachement à mélanger l’impro et le répertoire. C’est donc une rencontre de personnalités et de timbres, qui se mélangent très bien, parce qu’ils sont assez chauds, dans un registre large, ni trop grave, ni trop aigu. Le tuba, c’est ton premier instrument ?Depuis l’âge de deux ans, je voulais faire de la trompette. J’en avais vue une dans une fanfare dans la rue et j’ai tanné ma mère mais j’étais trop petite. Vers 5 ans, j’ai commencé la guitare classique. À 7 ans, une fois que mes dents de laits étaient tombées et que les définitives avaient poussé, j’ai commencé le tuba parce que ma mère ne pouvait pas m’amener au cours de trompette, les seuls créneaux possibles, c’était soit ça, soit le cor. Aujourd’hui, je suis contente parce que je pense que j’aurais été insupportable avec une trompette entre les mains. Qu’est ce que tu écoutais, petite, à la maison ?Ma mère est prof de danse classique, donc beaucoup de musiques de ballets, forcément. Mais, très tôt, elle m’a donné une radio pour pouvoir écouter ce que je voulais : beaucoup de musiques urbaines, françaises ou américaines, R’n’B, soul, latino pop, et beaucoup d’afrobeat aussi. Evidemment, j’écoute les oeuvres que je dois travailler. Parfois j’ai de petites hyper-fixations, genre que du Stockhausen pendant un mois. Mais, c’est vrai que j’aime beaucoup ces musiques confortfood pour le cerveau. Quand tu joues, as-tu l’impression d’être influencée par tes écoutes de tous les jours ?Pour l’instant, c’est encore assez cloisonné, entre ce que j’aime écouter et ce que j’aime faire. C’est pas du tout la même chose. Pour le coup j’ai un bagage assez varié à force d’expérimenter à gauche et à droite, mais entre ce que j’écoute et ce que je joue, c’est encore en chantier. Il y a de plus en plus d’instruments assez éloignés du strict instrumentarium jazz, présents notamment via une nouvelle génération de musiciennes.La question des femmes est effectivement de plus en plus présente auprès de notre génération. Après, pour la représentation du tuba, on a quand même quelques illustres sur la scène française. Michel Godard qui vient jouer souvent ici, ou François Thuillier avec qui j’ai étudié. Que ce soit classique ou jazz, l’école du tuba est quand même assez développée. Au-delà de l’instrumentarium et des proportions de genres, il y a surtout une ouverture, un décloisonnement. De plus en plus de projets sont mixtes. Ça nous permet de naviguer entre les scènes. Je reviens un peu sur cette question de nouvelle génération. Tu es une musicienne plutôt connectée sur les réseaux sociaux. Quel est ton rapport à ces outils ?
C’est vrai et j’ai grandi avec. À un moment, il y a eu un switch. Je m’y suis moins intéressée pour le « fun », que comme plateforme de communication. J’ai pas encore de site internet, ni de newsletter, donc je fais des stories sur instagram, et des posts, autant que je peux. Pas vraiment comme support d’actualité, plutôt comme portfolio. Si quelqu’un cherche ce que je fais, il y a un peu un catalogue de mes dernières expériences et je trouve ça assez vivant, assez parlant. on peut aussi mettre des photos un peu marrante. Est ce que tu y vois une plus-value ?Ça me parle plus qu’un site internet un peu édulcoré, un peu lisse. Pour moi c’est un peu plus fun, à faire et à entretenir. Certaines personnes — dont la génération importe peu d’ailleurs — ne sont pas du tout réceptives, et se disent que c’est de la pub, que c’est trop superficiel. Ensuite, on aime ou non le style que j’utilise. Ça me permet une plus grande liberté, d’exprimer davantage

D’abord en étant liée à la Scène nationale de Martinique, Tropiques Atrium ; puis à la Nouvelle-Orléans à la Villa Albertine, où tu as extirpé un projet musical sur les cultures caribéennes et créoles. Est-ce que tu vois un grand continuum au sein de l’espace des Caraïbes ? Tout à fait. En fait, mon cercle de travail se situe autour du monde créole, des langues créoles. C’est fondamentalement presque la même langue et donc, par prolongement, des influences qui se ressemblent très fortement. C’est une même histoire avec des points de vue différents. Nicolas Lossen, le guitariste martiniquais, disait que ce que l’on avait appelé blues aux Etats-Unis, correspondait au gwo ka ou bèlè en Guadeloupe et en Martinique. Il avait fait un peu la même analogie entre la biguine et le jazz à la Nouvelle-Orléans. Cela fait aussi partie de cette grande histoire créole ? Pour moi, toute forme traditionnelle existe dans des lieux où il y a une diaspora africaine. Cette diaspora fait en sorte que des gens se mettent ensemble et font de la musique. Cela crée une identité, propre à un certain lieu. Comme le dit Nicolas, il y a du bèlè en Martinique, du gwo ka en Guadeloupe ; à la Nouvelle-Orléans du second line, ou l’évolution de ce que l’on pourrait appeler le jazz et les musiques improvisées. Pour moi, il y a certes une continuité, mais il y a surtout cette diaspora qui propose des sons différents. Quand on écoute la biguine martiniquaise et le son de la Nouvelle-Orléans des années vingt, c’est plus ou moins la même chose. Parce qu’il y a eu aussi des échanges et des musiciens qui ont bougé de part et d’autres. Ce sont des sons qui ont muté, et qui sont devenus ce qu’ils sont aujourd’hui. Tu as également été au Sénégal. J’en reviens, j’y étais en mai, et là, c’était une autre aventure. J’étais partie étudier les liens d’amitié entre Aimé Césaire et Léopold Sédar Senghor, et toujours ce lien entre l’Afrique, la Martinique et les Antilles. Paul Gilroy dans L’Atlantique Noire (Black Atlantic), parle du lien et du réseau entre la Louisiane, Les Caraïbes, et l’Afrique, avec la musique en tant que dénominateur commun… Est-ce que tu inscris tes projets dans une telle histoire ? Oui, mais de manière assez spontanée. Notre identité détermine en réalité ce que l’on a envie de faire, et ce que l’on a dans la tête. Moi, je pense que c’est venu tout seul. J’ai grandi en France, je suis née en France, mais mes origines m’ont toujours interpellée. Quel est l’héritage de nous autres, Antillais, né·es en France ? De jeunes musicien.nes qui sont bercé·es par la musique des Antilles mais qui l’écoutent depuis la France ? Et finalement, qu’est-ce qui se passe quand on y va et quand on creuse ? Du Créole ? Sur Indigo Bay, c’est moi qui improvise. Dans ma langue spirituelle (elle rit). Alors, quand tu manies plusieurs langues, est-ce que ça peut être une autre réponse à cette dialectique, entre tes racines et ton identité de maintenant ? À l’époque, sur Indigo Bay, j’utilisais cette forme de chant inventée, car j’avais besoin de dire des choses sans nécessairement y poser des mots. En entendant Indigo Bay, tu pouvais penser à ce que tu voulais, à ce que le morceau te faisait ressentir. En grandissant, j’ai une idée un peu plus formelle de ce que j’ai voulu dire, des mots que je veux transmettre. Maintenant, mon intérêt et mes recherches autour du Créole font que j’ai intégré davantage les paroles dans ma musique, avec du sens et avec des mots. Est-ce que ça explique aussi pourquoi tu es en trio aujourd’hui ? Ta voix prend forcément de l’ampleur dans une plus petite formation. Pour moi, l’instrumentation n’a pas tellement de poids sur la musique, c’est plutôt l’orchestration. La forme du trio, c’est aussi une contrainte économique pour la tournée. Ça m’a permis d’essayer, et de voir que ça fonctionnait bien. Pour moi, le centre, le cœur même de la musique, c’est la contrebasse et le chant. Est-ce que La Sido est devenue Si Doré ? (elle rit) Non, mais on n’a plus vingt ans. La Sido a pris de la maturité, un peu d’âge et est devenue une femme, finalement. Je dirais qu’en tant que groupe, on se connaît très bien. C’est très plaisant de débuter un nouveau projet, avec ce que ça a d’excitant, de complicité, et de confiance entre nous. Les choix des chansons et des thématiques ne sont plus les mêmes qu’il y a 6 ans. Il y a le désir de parler avec un regard de femmes et de parler des femmes. Auparavant aussi, mais c’était au prisme des paroles d’hommes. J’avais une envie nouvelle. Dans ce deuxième disque, il y a un côté un peu moins burlesque ou théâtral. Est-ce que ça vient du sérieux de l’âge ou du répertoire ? Plutôt du répertoire, car avec l’âge on peut rester burlesque (voire l’être de plus en plus). Ici, on s’attaque à trois artistes qui ont des parcours complexes, du fait de leur condition de femme et de l’époque. Même si on a souhaité mettre un peu de légèreté par-ci par-là dans le choix des chansons, ces femmes ont des récits de vie assez sombres. Elles parlent sincèrement de leur vie, on est en plein dans le réel. C’est ce qu’elles disaient elles-même : pour apprendre à les connaître, il suffit d’écouter leur chanson. C’est cette dimension tragique qui fait le lien, chez vous, entre Anne Sylvestre, Barbara et Colette Magny ? C’est plutôt venu dans l’autre sens. Je savais que je voulais un répertoire de femmes. Je trouvais que ces trois-là, qui ont vécu à la même époque, avaient des caractères et une manière artistique de s’exprimer très différents qui pouvaient bien se répondre. Je me suis imaginé ça un peu comme la rencontre entre Ferré, Brassens et Brel. Même si elle est assez géniale et passionnante, tu as ces trois bonhommes qui parlent entre eux et qui en mettent pas mal dans la tronche des femmes. D’où cette interrogation : qu’est-ce que ça aurait donné une réunion similaire avec Colette Magny, Anne Sylvestre et Barbara ? D’ailleurs dans le concert, il y aura des extraits sonores d’interview. J’ai essayé de recréer ce dialogue imaginaire entre elles. Qu’est-ce qu’elles se disent ? Pourquoi est-ce qu’elles chantent. Pour elles, ne pas le faire, ce serait comme mourir. Si elles ont longtemps chanté avec les mots des autres, elles ont eu envie un jour de parler avec leurs mots de femmes, d’où le fait qu’elles aient commencé à écrire. Il y aussi l’importance de la colère, nécessaire et motrice, surtout chez Anne Sylvestre et Colette Magny. Chez Barbara, c’est plutôt l’amour à tout prix. C’est très fort venant d’elle, vu combien elle a été traumatisée dès l’enfance et comment elle s’est reconstruite grâce à l’amour.Comme le disent Anne Sylvestre ou Barbara, en écrivant pour elles, elles écrivent pour toutes. C’est un peu le sens de ces paroles, « filles de vague ou de ruisseau, filles de brume ou de plein ciel »… L’histoire d’une femme, c’est l’histoire de toutes les femmes. C’est aussi pourquoi le disque s’appelle ainsi, et pourquoi ce sera le premier morceau du concert. Pour bien poser les bases. Colette Magny a un gros héritage dans le monde du jazz, avec le monde du free et l’histoire des africains-américains. Elle a un répertoire hyper bruitiste et incarne aussi l’image d’une anti-femme traditionnelle. Comment as-tu appréhendé cet héritage ? J’ai été attirée par son caractère hyper libre et par sa capacité à tester plein de trucs. Après, dans les chansons que l’on a choisi, et la façon dont on les interprète, on en fait encore autre chose. Puisque je n’ai ni sa voix, ni son caractère. Sa folie, en somme. L’héritage s’est fait plutôt de la matière du texte, alors que la musique nous en avons fait quelque chose qui colle vraiment à nous. Je n’ai pas commencé le chant avec le jazz, ce n’était pas ma culture. J’y suis entré par les standards de Billie Holliday et des blues. A la base j’ai plutôt une culture folk, mais tout s’est vite mélangé. Et plus j’avance, plus il y a quelque chose qui s’écarte du jazz. Ça dépend aussi des périodes (rires). Est-ce que tu vois des différences vocales entre ces styles-là ? Et comment les appréhendes-tu dans ton répertoire ? Lorsque j’ai abordé Bessie Smith, j’ai fait une première ébauche, assez traditionnelle, avec piano, basse, batterie. Ça ne marchait pas trop car je n’incarne pas vraiment ce répertoire, je ne suis pas une femme noire. Mais j’aimais ce que cette femme représentait, les codes qu’elle cassait, son authenticité, le chanté-vrai plutôt que le chanté-beau, alors je me suis dit que je devais l’approprier avec qui j’étais. Ce fut un long processus pour se débarrasser des tics et aller chercher la simplicité. La voix est toujours en processus, d’où le fait qu’on l’entende évoluer sur les différents albums. C’est aussi mon propos de devenir la plus naturelle possible. J’avais entendu sur une interview sur France 24 que tu t’étais plongée par hasard dans cette musique, lorsque tu étais en Angleterre. Effectivement, c’est une musique que je n’écoutais vraiment jamais. J’ai rencontré un contrebassiste américain qui m’a encouragé à faire une session jazz. Et j’ai rencontré les paroles des chansons avant la musique elle-même. Avant que tu ne commences à chanter cette musique, qu’est-ce qui te venait à l’esprit quand on te parlait de jazz ? Je n’imaginais pas ces chanteuses-là. Je voyais quelque chose de plus instrumental, de plus free, et des chanteuses que je caricaturais de loin, avec des scat et des notes étranges. J’étais loin d’avoir compris la puissance de ces chanteuses et comment leurs voix étaient à tomber par terre.  Comment t’es-tu retrouvée à être accompagnée par ces chanteuses dans ta discographie ? Quand j’ai commencé sur mon premier disque avec le répertoire de Billie, et que j’ai creusé avec des paroles que j’aimais, je suis tombé sur Bessie Smith. Je me suis retrouvé à savoir qui avait inspiré l’une, d’où venaient ces femmes et leur histoire. Le style me plaisait, donc quand tu te plonges dans quelque chose que tu affectionnes, tu finis sur une route où tu aimes beaucoup de choses. J’étais aussi intriguée de remonter le temps. Billie Holliday, Bessie Smith, toutes les femmes autour de Ma Rainey. Et quand on va plus loin, on tombe sur les work songs. C’était souvent des chants d’hommes ou collectif. En cherchant, j’ai mis la main sur des chants de femme, et je suis tombé dans toutes ces vies qui m’ont fascinées. Finalement, j’ai remonté le temps jusqu’à Women’s Legacy, avec des chants de transmission qui datent de très longtemps, et qui ont voyagé dans des pays. Uniquement des voix, sans instrument. Tu évoquais aussi le rôle des frères Lomax dans cette recherche. Les deux ont voyagé dans le sud des Etats-Unis pour aller écouter et enregistrer des témoignages d’hommes et de femmes, dans des prisons agricoles ou en dehors. L’un des deux, Alan, a même fait venir quelques femmes comme Vera Hall à la fin de sa vie à New York pour qu’elle enregistre sa voix et donc, son héritage. A un moment, elle chante une balade écossaise du XIIIe siècle qui n’évoque non pas sa condition actuelle, mais une histoire d’amour. C’est troublant tous ces témoignages… Et c’était un peu le but de Women’s Legacy, que j’ai revisité sur scène. J’ai un peu raccourci la formation par rapport à l’album, pour que ça sonne plus brute et plus acoustique. Beaucoup des thèmes de ces femmes que tu chantes ont encore de la pertinence, à quasiment un siècle d’intervalle. Comment l’expliques-tu ? Ce n’est pas un mystère. A chaque siècle, il y a eu des dénonciations, des esprits qui s’ouvrent et il y a un cheminement qui continue autour de la place des femmes. On peut le voir des deux côtés : c’est positif de voir que tout bouge en permanence, même à leur époque ; c’est aussi un chemin sans fin. Il y a aussi l’humour dans ces chansons que j’aime beaucoup, notamment quand elles parlent de leurs histoires d’amour. Ça, je pense que ce sera encore vrai dans dix siècles.
