YOU NEED THIS!. Yes, ok Jean-Claude, this one, we need it too. The London-based DJ and impresario strikes again with a classy review of the German label Enja Records. Launched in 1971 by Matthias Wincklemann and Horst Weber, two Munichers on the right side of life, the Teutonic record company counts in its boxes, randomly and in disorder, albums signed by Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus, Kenny Barron, Abbey Lincoln and Freddie Hubbard. Not worse. There is also the last Chet Baker who complained once again, magnificently and with orchestra, of always falling in love too easily. Here, we are still elsewhere. In the dreadful vibes of Bobby Hutcherson, in the crazy jazz of Cecil McBee and especially in the dances of the devil of Mal Waldron. ‘What It Is’ is impressive and justifies itself the acquisition, honest or not, of this record. The rest is very good, too. Very deep, very European. Federated and fraternal. Underestimated too, certainly, in front of the USA’s ogre. Like ‘No More’, this little magic nugget delivered by Jon Hendricks in the end but not without hunger. Yes, JC, we NEED THIS, definitely.
YOU NEED THIS !. Oui ok Jean-Claude, celui-là, on en a besoin aussi. L’imprésario et DJ londonien frappe une nouvelle fois avec une classe revue du label allemand Enja Records. Lancé en 1971 par Matthias Winckelmann et Horst Weber, deux Munichois du bon côté de la vie, la maison de disques teutonne compte dans ses bacs, au hasard et dans le désordre, des galettes signées Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus, Kenny Barron, Abbey Lincoln encore Freddie Hubbard. Pas pire. Il y a aussi le dernier Chet Baker qui se plaignait une fois encore, magnifiquement et avec orchestre, de tomber toujours trop facilement amoureux. Ici, on est encore ailleurs. Dans les vibes terribles de Bobby Hutcherson, dans le jazz dingo de Cecil McBee et surtout dans les danses du diable de Mal Waldron. What It Is est redoutable et justifie à elle seule l’acquisition, honnête ou non, de ce disque. Le reste est très bon, aussi. Très deep, très européen. Fédéré et fraternel. Sous-estimé aussi, forcément, face à l’ogre des USA. Comme No More, cette petite pépite magique livrée par un Jon Hendricks sur le fin mais pas sans faim. Oui, JC, On NEED THIS, carrément.
