What can I do, don’t know what to do? When everything has been tried, opened and tested? Play anything once again, some will say. And they will be partly right. Qu’est-ce on peut faire, sais pas quoi faire ? Quand tout a été tenté, ouvert et testé ? Rejouer diront certains. Et ils auront en partie raison. Ne serait-ce qu’en visant l’aspect ludique de ce mot, « rejouer ». Remettre en jeu. L’histoire, l’instant et les logiques humaines. C’est un peu de cela dont il s’agit avec le duo inédit Enrico Rava / Fred Hersch. The song Is You est non seulement le titre-codex de ce disque, c’est aussi celui d’une des 8 plages du disque. Plage-résumé où le pianiste la joue pointilliste et l’Italien aérien, l’américain explorant le recoins du standards quand le trompettiste rend, lui, hommage à la descente de gamme qui vous vrille l’intérieur. Simple, ces deux maitres de leur art improvisateur, le sont d’évidence, simples. Tout est très clair dans The Song Is You. Pas facile, non, mais évident. Comme si en rejouant l’héritage et la mémoire du répertoire, Child’s Song magnifique, ou encore I’m Getting Sentimental Over You, poignant Round Midnight, les deux musiciens remettaient en jeu ce qu’on en croyait savoir. Rien à faire d’autre que de laisser faire. De plonger à deux bras jamais raccourcis dans cette musique. Liquide, émouvante. D’une clarté fascinante.
