As a good businessman, Marion “Suge” Knight, the sulphurous boss of the Californian label Death Row, had tried to do a good deed. A marketing one first of all, since it was the first time that a rap record company released a compilation on Xmas theme. And incomes from the sales was supposed to be given back “to the community” whatever it might say then. Except that in December 1996, Death Row Records was not the same team paddock as it had been a year earlier, when it released the incredible Dogg Food from Dogg Pound. Three months before, in September 1996, their neat yearling, 2Pac, died in Las Vegas. As for Dr Dre who had already left in March 1996 to go founding his Aftermath. This Christmas on Death Row feels a bit like the wind is changing. And smells mothballs, too. Besides some intense moments, like the cultism Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto signed by Snoop Dogg and his best friends, let’s admit that the sixteen tracks for one hour and eleven minutes of soulful hip-hop of this compilation would barely convince some. Although including some flashy names like Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, Danny Boy or O.F.T.B, the cast will unfortunately not save the day. Even the of Xmas, gosh.
En bon homme d’affaires, Marion « Suge » Knight, le sulfureux boss du label californien Death Row avait pourtant bien tenté le coup. Un coup marketing avant tout, puisque de mémoire, c’est la première fois qu’une maison de disques de rap sortait une compile sur le thème de Noël et que les revenus des ventes étaient censés être reversés « à la communauté ». Sauf qu’en décembre 1996, Death Row Records n’est pas la même écurie qu’un an plus tôt, lorsqu’elle mettait sur orbite l’incroyable Dogg Food du Dogg Pound. Trois mois auparavant, en septembre 1996, leur meilleur poulain, 2Pac, décède à Las Vegas. Quant à Dr Dre, il avait déjà quitté le navire en mars 1996 pour fonder Aftermath. Ce Christmas on Death Row sent donc un peu le vent tourner. Et la naphtaline. Bien sûr, on a droit à quelques moments intenses, comme le cultissime Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto signé Snoop Dogg et ses meilleurs amis, même si avouons-le, les seize titres pour une heure et onze minutes de soulful hip-hop de cette compilation convaincront peu de monde. Et le casting, bien que comprenant quelques noms clinquants comme le Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, Danny Boy ou O.F.T.B, ne sauvera malheureusement pas les meubles. Foutue magie de Noël.
