Pas de scène, pas de surplomb : les deux musiciens sont installés au milieu de la fosse. Le public s’est massé autour, formant un cercle serré. Ambiance tribale, clairement. Au centre : l’un, front barré d’une petite lampe torche, plongé dans ses modulaires et boîtes à rythmes, concentré comme un horloger fou. À côté, son complice est en mouvement constant : danse ample, cheveux en suspension, il envoie une énergie contagieuse. Peu à peu, la salle suit. Les regards circulent, les corps aussi. Pas de morceaux découpés, pas de respirations trop marquées. Ici, un fil rouge sonore tendu de bout en bout : une progression continue, fluide, où post-techno, krautrock digital et grooves mutants se métamorphosent sans relâche. Par moments, une polyrythmie boiteuse déclenche l’étincelle collective, ailleurs une nappe grinçante installe un climat de transe sourde. Le set joue avec les nerfs et les corps : hypnose, déséquilibre contrôlé, montées imprévues. La proximité renforce l’effet : on sent la matière sonore vivre, réagir. On se défait lentement du cercle, un bout de rythme encore logé dans le crâne. La salle respire, déjà prête pour la suite. Ça raconte le spleen nocturne, la vie moderne et ça envoie du proto-punk à tout rompre. Le sextet de Brooklyn nous refait le coup du son qui pense, du vacarme en cadence. Canon. Brûlant. Grinçant. What Time is It ? « Nation Time », hurlait le free jazzman Joe McPhee en son temps. « Party Time », beuglent aujourd’hui les TVOD avec leur punk intelligent. Oh Dear, c’est un tel furieux bazar au States qu’on prend avec plaisir la Party, la Nation attendra encore un peu. Party Time, c’est aussi le titre du dernier LP, sorti le mois dernier. La scène en prolonge le bonheur et les échos monstrueux, les influences diverses et mêlées jusqu’à ne plus pouvoir être reconnues. Écriture classe à la Deerhunter, défonce shoegaze, morgue grunge, imitations scéniques à la Andy Kaufman, structures à la Pixies. Heavy then loud. Longue ligne de basse imparables et lyrisme émouvants posé sur des riffs d’un tranchant à faire pâlir le meilleur boucher de Rungis. Trop occupé à mater Netflix. USNetflix and Kill. Not so cool, TVOD. Or TV Overdose, to put it bluntly. An overdose regurgitated, without a doubt, by six little mouths hungry for love. Endearing, scruffy, and completely immersed in an incredibly contagious shared energy. “Messsi bôcuu, we’re from Brooklyn, New York,” says Tyler Wright with a working-class accent, while his chaotic companions behave like spoiled children in art class. It recounts nocturnal melancholy and modern life, and lets loose with proto-punk. The Brooklyn sextet strikes again with a thoughtful sound and rhythmic noise. Brilliant. Burning. Grating. Oh dear, it’s such chaos in the United States that we’re happy to take the party, the nation will have to wait a little longer. The live session enhances the joy and monstrous echoes, the diverse influences blend together until they become unrecognizable. Classy writing à la Deerhunter, shoegaze jams, grunge arrogance, Andy Kaufman-style stage imitations, Pixies-style structures. Heavy then loud. Unstoppable bass lines and moving lyrics laid over riffs so sharp they would astonish the best butcher in Rungis market. Probably too busy watching Netflix. Ingénieuse croisée d’une époque où le jazz était aux mains de petits maîtres aventureux (par exemple, Freddy Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Andrew Hill) et de l’actualité d’une tradition en mutation constante. La voie empruntée est celle des ancêtres, de la legacy US et d’une Caraïbes démultipliée. Dans cette danse de liberté, ce quintet-là ne plaisante pas quand il annonce mélanger les cultures. Et quand dans tout cela passe Aznavour avec sa Bohème sous le bras, le moment efface pour mille années le moindre biopic frelaté.Le groupe mené par la contrebassiste est très tôt sur ses rails, à vive allure dans sa longue ascension inaltérable, saillie ici ou là par le piano et les soufflants-soufflets. Au-dessus de leur liberté d’intervention, de la précision des placements de chacun, il y a la basse, terrestre en esprit, volatile pour tutoyer la voix qui s’y attache. Surdimensionnée, sans doute un effet de la récente résidence de Sélène Saint-Aimé à la Villa Albertine. Ce quintet est grand, ce quintet sonne beau. Premiers succès, la file d’attente s’étire bien avant l’ouverture, un peu après le début du set, le public est au rendez-vous, mélangé, curieux, intergénérationnel. Dans ce lieu hors-format, coincé entre canal, bosquets et guirlandes suspendues, Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek ouvrent la soirée du samedi. Unanimité des corps et des esprits. Sur scène, le groupe déploie sa formule : psyché, soul, musiques anatoliennes, le tout fondu dans une énergie collective tendue et généreuse. Derya, au centre, assure la ligne à suivre. Charismatique sans effort, bağlama en bandoulière, elle guide son combo cavalant à grand cheval entre Berlin et la France. À ses côtés, Helen Wells, à la batterie d’une précision tranquille, presque minimaliste, Graham Mushnik aux claviers, puis ce bassiste XXL, remplaçant d’Antonin Voyant, en retrait, concentré sans rien lâcher du groove commun. Ça joue carré, et ça respire. Larges bouffées tirées de Yarın Yoksa (« S’il n’y a pas de lendemain »), dernier disque couronné par Leon Michels sur Big Crown. Pas de chronologie pourtant, pas de promo plaquée : la tracklist, organique et progressive, vit de morceaux piochés à l’envi dans les disques précédents. Ouverture de set sur un groove contenu, à peine dansant, mais déjà tendu. Derya parle alors de résistance, d’alliance. Avec Direne Direne (« Résister encore et encore »), le concert prend une autre dimension — texte limpide, rythmique serrée, voix qui s’élève sans forcer. Puis viennent d’autres temps forts. Cool Hand, single actuel à l’équilibre étrange entre groove léger et rupture sentimentale, met la fosse en mouvement. Bal (« Miel »), tiré de Dost 1 & 2, installe ses lumières sous le soleil qui se couche derrière le plateau de Talant. La dynamique se poursuit, les morceaux s’enchaînent, les corps suivent. On danse, on écoute aussi. On aime beaucoup. Rappel sans appel. le groupe revient avec un Dom Dom Kurşunu (« La Balle dum-dum ») chargé comme un canon, tiré du disque Kar Yağar. Classique du groupe, lourd de sens, interprété ici sans pathos, joué parfaitement à la lisière du free hargneux. À côté de la scène, un couple turcophone chante à pleins poumons, et leurs chants portent, ce morceau. Et c’est exactement ça, ce set d’ouverture de saison : pas un concert pour montrer, mais pour partager ce qui pèse, et qui, finalement, nous relie les uns aux autres. Yoann Loustalot et son trio jazz jouait à La Vapeur. Marrant de se demander ce qu’il reste, dans l’air, et d’un soir sur l’autre, d’un concert. Avec une pointe d’ésotérisme de fourreur, on imagine avec joie le choc des ondes douces du trio de Loustalot frictionnée par celles, plus velues, de Pneu. De la fourrure à la fureur, il n’y a qu’une jante. Pneu rassemble son monde, sans traÎner. Mode boiler, on ne jouera pas tant que vous ne nous toucherez pas. On veut sentir le contact, on veut sentir la joie, on veut sentir la sueur. OK Fred. Allons-y alors. Le duo noise et tourangeau la joue minimal, la joue compact, la joue en longue phase rock, à peine interrompue par le sustain des pédales d’effets. De l’effet, Jean Baptiste Geoffroy et Jérôme Vassereau ont l’art et la manière. Le genre de truc très libre qui sent bon le caoutchouc et la dissidence très sonore. Guitare en ruptures versus batterie pléthorique, patterns monstres versus arpège « quasi-free-jazz », lance un coco derrière moi, en pleine montée de joie de vivre et de bière. Comme quoi, quand Pneu dérape, c’est bon, ça cartonne, ça prend la braise à tous les foyers : rock, free, noise. La science des équilibres et du fracas est masterisée sur le bout des doigts. Ecouter Get Old Or Die Tryin (Head Records, fév 2025), pour s’en rendre compte. Pneu est un groupe de rock, donc un peu poseur forcément. Et leurs airs d’impros drama-queen se pare d’une énergie et d’une classe imparables et jouissives, face à une fosse-meilleur-des-mondes où surnagent T-shirt Jean-Claude Vandamme, casquette Yacco très agitée, moustache vélo impeccable, mulet non-binaire. Cette même fosse qui accueillera les terres désolées, parcourues par les petits Suisses de Coilguns. Très puissants, les petits Suisses. Écoute intense. Salle est pleine. Très pleine. On y joue des coudes. On y cherche un angle. On partage l’espace. L’ambiance de ce deuxième concert, en co-orga avec Le George Collectif, reste douce. C’est ce que Bruxelles fait de mieux : créer du calme au cœur du chaos, avec ce mélange caractéristique d’accueil et de détachement. Pas de tension. Juste l’envie d’être là. Wendy Eisenberg est là, elle aussi. Guitariste, new yorkaise, improvisatrice. Banjoiste, aussi, avec des albums parfaits, comme Bent Ring (2021), par exemple. Formée au jazz, passée par les scènes noise, free et folk américaine, dans les marges chez Tzadik, sur Bandcamp, sur scène ou ailleurs. Ici, elle est sur un fil, quasi dénudée, voix fragile et suspendue. Ça grince, ça glisse, ça se tord. C’est précis et risqué, imaginez : marcher pieds nus sur du verre. Et c’est beau pour ça, et pour ce dialogue avec sa guitare. Les doigts cherchent des chemins de traverse, passent d’un motif à l’autre comme si elle écrivait une partition en temps réel, dépassait le son familier d’une guitare pour en faire une extension du corps, de la voix, du souffle. Ryan Sawyer, lui, est une pointure souterraine. Ryan Sawyer, c’est l’Amérique, pour tous ceux qui aiment la liberté. Free rock et scène improvisée from New York, compagnon d’armes de Thurston Moore ou de Matana Roberts. Ce soir-là, chez 72Records, il bat comme il respire : brut, net, vibrant. Frappe tendue, gestes amples, maîtrise sèche. Phrases courtes doublée d’une syntaxe physique. Sawyer chante aussi. Voix grave, brumeuse, qui flanche parfois, mais qui touche. Toujours. Petit silence, quelques regards, et la réponse est scandée. Hélène Duret lance une des premières publiques de son sextet. Compact comme un pack du Quinze de France marchant sur les Anglais. Le ton est posé. L’ambiance aussi. C’est la fin de sa résidence à l’Atelier du Plateau. Pas de cérémonie, pas de clap de fin solennel. Juste un moment, bien là, vivant. Joyeusement vivant. Au centre, Hélène Duret, donc. Ses clarinettes, une écoute ultra fine, un calme qui tient tout. Groove inoxydable, compositions posés très loin des morceaux à effet. Des bouts d’émotions, des trucs ressentis, pas toujours identifiables, mais qu’on reconnaît sans avoir besoin d’explications. La clarinettiste ne raconte rien, mais laisse survenir. Les récits sont dans ce qui est joué, plus que dans ce qui est dit. Toujours très précieux, cette vision musicale. Le pack avance donc. Pas de basse, pas de piano. Cinq soufflants, une batterie. Chacun bouge, soutient, se planque, ressort. Ça joue avec les rôles, ça ne s’accroche à rien. Et c’est ainsi que tient ce sextet.Delphine Joussein ne lâche jamais ses pédales. C’est son extension. Elle bidouille pendant qu’elle souffle, elle trafique le son sans jamais perdre la ligne. C’est brut, libre, explosif parfois. En face, Quentin Biardeau part dans la même direction. Pas de contrepoids, pas de stabilisation. Le comparse d’Hélène Duret dans Couple Sympathique répond avec la même fougue que Joussein. Deux feux en même temps, mais aucun ne brûlent la baraque. Sur le brasier, Léa Ciechelski. Finesse absolue. Elle se faufile, écoute tout, place juste. Rien ne déborde. Chaque note compte. Jessica Simon, au trombone, vient placer net, timbrer direct. Ça vise juste, ça coupe court à toute contradiction. Et puis la frappe droite d’Ariel Tessier, à la batterie, claire, jamais pesante. Hyper précise, hyper présente. Aucune loi n’affirme qu’un sextet sextote nécessairement. Ici le son circule sans séduction, livre et donne tout sans fard. On entend les souffles, les petits accidents, les silences entre deux phrases. On voit les regards. Vivant, nous disions plus haut. Arrive le dernier morceau.« Une tragédie », dit Hélène. Rien de plus, évidemment. La pièce démarre lentement, tendue, resserrée. Quelque chose s’alourdit, doucement. Une gravité silencieuse, sans pathos. Le genre de truc qu’on sent tous, mais qu’on ne nomme pas. La musique est faite pour cela, transmettre des mystères. Ce sextet s’y entend plutôt pas mal. Convaincante et en mouvement, elle aussi, la musique électrique de Zar, où le Oud volute à loisir sur fond de kora branchée sur secteur et de machines électro très inspirées. Boom boom yallah. C’est très bon.Très bon et encore ailleurs que les milles londoniens français et miniatures, Sarāb est bâtit pour durer, dans une forme de réinvention inépuisable. Londres n’est pas très loin, certes mais reste dotée ici d’un supplément d’âme. D’une torpeur intime et chaleureuse. En parfaits gônes du Chaabi, Climène Zarkan et Baptiste Ferrandis font feu de toutes leurs influences. Franco-Syriennes pour la chanteuse, européennes et au-delà pour le guitariste. En résulte une musique faite de mirages (sarāb, en langue arabe) et d’urgences. De plaisirs, aussi.
