Chez Sornette, on joue les funambules. Dans l’esprit des expérimentations Ornette Coleman-Don Cherry, Sornette en reprend l’héritage à sa sauce. Le drive nu devient hypnotique, frôlant l’auto-suffisance et l’autarcie. La basse au cœur, la batterie au pied. Devant, trompette-saxo livrent leurs thèmes pêle-mêle : héroïques, filandreux. Avec un poil de second degré aussi. Reprendre Coleman, certes, mais avec son truc à soi. On retrouve l’approche très terre-à-terre d’Ornette, ce mélange entre un cha-ba-da droit et les polyrythmies sur le reste, une basse mi walking-mi improvisatrice, et les solistes qui s’avancent dans la brèche, béante. Le tapis sonore est là, rien que pour eux. Le duo diffère : Hes, gourmand, s’engouffre et malmène l’équilibre. Savoyat, plus subtil, contourne les obstacles et se joue de ce que la rythmique lui offre. Sornette, la bêtise enfantine, brosse son autoportrait : Ornette sérieusement, Coleman facétieusement.
