Et donc, dans le game du game, ça écoute quoi un skater ? Electronic Arts (EA) a réglé ses ambiances sans jamais tomber dans les clichés gnangnan. OST éclectique, selecta à l’ancienne où le funk, le punk 70’s et le hip-hop slident ensemble sur la rampe de la liberté. La liberté, c’est le leitmotiv de la série des Skate. Grâce à trois zinzins tout droit sortis du Grand Nord. 2 frères, Chad et Jared Moldenhauer, fiers papas d’une direction artistique qui renoue avec la patte graphique des grands studios d’animation des années 30, Walt Disney et Max Fleischer entre autre. Et Kris Maddigan, meilleur ami des Moldenhauer et compositeur. Percussionniste dans l’Orchestre symphonique de Toronto, il bosse également avec des line-up jazz. Pour composer la bande sonore de Cuphead, Maddigan veut revenir aux sources, à la naissance des grands orchestres jazz : « Je voulais vraiment l’aborder comme si l’âge d’or du big band et l’âge d’or des jeux vidéo pouvaient coexister simultanément ». Simple et cohérent. L’esthétique visuelle est axée sur les dessins animés du début 20ème. Les moyens balancés par le studio MDHR (créateur de Cuphead) pour la production et la réalisation des musiques sont complètement dingues. 13 musiciens, 2 formations musicales, soit un big band et un ragtime band. L’intro de Cuphead te prend aux tripes et te renvoie 70 ans en arrière. L’arrivé des cuivres soutenue par le swing up de la batterie annonce clairement un style de jeu effréné, difficile et rageant. Cuphead c’est un die and retry. Plus tu meurs, plus tu anticipes les pièges et les ennemi.e.s qui vont te tomber dessus. Horrible ? Nop. Addictif ? Oui. Ce jeu remue un bouillon de références musicales. Les influences se mélangent et les styles évoluent. Dans Funfair Fever Maddigan balance un ragtime moderne à la sauce Scott Joplin, papa du genre et influence majeure de la bande son. On peut y entendre des sonorités qui font penser à l’univers Mario, notamment l’Athletic Theme de Super Mario World (1990). Cuphead ne se contente pas de jouer sur une esthétique artistique du début des années 30. Le jeu explore d’autres univers plus récents qui ne détruisent pas son ambiance vintage. Dans une partie de l’overworld (carte du monde interconnectée avec les autres zones du jeu) de Cuphead, on peut entendre Inkwell Isle Three. Tout est calme, aucun ennemi et on profite de la musique. Un jazz plus cool, plus moderne où le sax ténor laisse penser au souffle de Benny Golson. Ultra plaisant. Se reposer c’est bien, mais dégommer des boss à grand coup de flingue c’est mieux. À chaque boss, sa petite tuerie musicale. Cagney Carnation, par exemple, qui est une fleur gigantesque, poussée tout droit dans le terreau des films d’animations Fleischer et Disney comme Swing You Sinners (1930) et Flowers and Trees (1932). Carnation veut te botter le cul à base de graines et de pétales. Son thème, Floral Fury, est inspiré des sonorités latino-arabisantes, allusion certaines aux compos de Duke Ellington, notamment Caravan (1937).
