Et c’est bien. À la trompette, Quentin Ghomari la joue tantôt smooth, tantôt blues, invoque des tonalités jazz d’antan, apporte une importante palettes de teintes, dont certaines influences latines. Des vagues, des vagues, ça sonne polar, ça vire fanfare. Aux Fender Rhodes, Thibault Gomez. Touche seventies, parfois plus électro ou plus psyché. Ariel Tessier dont le solo de mi-set n’en finit pas fournit un regain d’énergie à l’explosivité générale. Etienne Renard, dans sa maîtrise habituelle, sans retenue, joue, beaucoup, et s’impose in fine. Pierrejean Gaucher fait briller son quintet, la démonstration est mélodique et mélodieuse. Pas de répit, on s’amuse des cadences, des textures et des influences. Organique, minutieux, inventif et enthousiasmant. Complexes et instinctifs. Le mélange est bon. Super, forcément, le mélange d’après SuperChevReuil. La musique du trio qui réunit Jérémie Guillemin (sax ténor), Anne-Elisabeth Decologne (contrebasse) et Adrien Desse (batterie), outre ses effets de structure, va chercher dans les ruptures harmoniques et rythmiques son terrain de jeu. Celui-ci semble inépuisable au vu des effets sonores, vocaux et musicaux qui viennent compléter le dispositif du combo en scène. Rien de gratuit, rien d’outrancier, tout est pesé, rubis sur l’ongle. C’est malin, toujours à propos et jamais roboratif. Impression, due sans doute grâce à ce qu’on reçoit d’abord et en plein front. L’énergie. Attention, pas le synonyme de puissance, même le Chevreuil n’en manque pas, mais cette force naturelle qui vous réjouit en deux secondes. Voir le cervidé en concert, c’est le suivre entre bonds et rebonds, entre rock, bruitisme et jazz têtu. Sophistiqué, nous disions en ouverture. Vous vous ennuyiez à quatre ? Antonin Leymarie : Non, à quatre, on s’éclate toujours. D’ailleurs, on sort un disque dans un mois, All Indians ?. On avait envie d’ouvrir le son du groupe. Le choix des musiciens et de leurs instruments, c’est venu de l’envie d’ajouter plutôt des cuivres et de l’harmonie. Pour les cuivres, on a demandé à Fred Roudet, Aymeric Avice et Simon Girard puis Aki Rissanen nous a rejoints au piano pour l’harmonie. Tu parles de votre prochain disque. Les arrangements pour l’orchestre ont-ils été travaillés en même temps que vous enregistriez l’album ? A.L. : Oui, et sur un temps assez long. C’est-à-dire sur trois ans. All indians ?, c’est à propos d’un voyage qu’on devait faire à la Nouvelle-Orléans et, dans le Grio, il y a l’influence des Trompes de Centrafrique ou de musiques d’Afrique de l’Ouest et aussi Ellington, Mingus… On s’est un peu donné toutes ces références. On n’a pas réfléchi à ce lien immédiat entre le quartet et le Grio mais, maintenant qu’on en parle, il y a quelque chose. Est-ce qu’Ellington, Mingus, Coleman, Ayler et la Nouvelle-Orléans étaient des points de jonction évidents entre vous et vos invités ? Fred Roudet : Il y a le son de base du quartet qu’on connaît parce qu’on s’est tous côtoyés. C’était excitant de s’imaginer dans ce son. On connaissait déjà la qualité des arrangeurs et des propositions… Le son s’est calé assez rapidement et on a su très rapidement de quoi on allait parler. Comment se passe l’écriture entre vous huit ? A.L. : Chacun amène un morceau, qui est une base du travail collective. Chacun ensuite va s’emparer de ces parties et peut-être bouger quelques petites choses pour se sentir bien. On peut fantasmer ainsi que chaque note appartient vraiment à la personne qui la joue. F.R. : On essaye beaucoup de choses sur les arrangements pour voir quelles combinaisons orchestrales sonnent le mieux. A.L. : Disons que c’est surtout en répète qu’on va régler ces choses-là. Soit on se les dit, soit il y a des propositions qui sont faites pendant qu’on joue. En concert, il y a autre chose qui se joue, la forme globale, l’intensité et la place de chacun et surtout les espaces de liberté qu’on n’avait pas envisagés en répète et qui se dévoilent en concert. Vous êtes huit, la musique est dense et l’ensemble généreux. Quelle place accordez-vous au silence ? A.L. : C’est une super question. J’espère que dans un concert, il y a des moments très pleins où ça pourrait presque être un peu trop et qu’il y a des moments où il y a beaucoup d’espace, des sons longs et de belles harmoniques. Je pense que chez nous, ça oscille un peu entre le plein et le vide. F.R. : Le silence, c’est une question hyper intéressante. Je ne sais pas si on en est déjà là sur le répertoire qu’on est en train de travailler mais ce qu’on essaye d’obtenir, c’est la dynamique. Ce qui est génial à chercher dans un ensemble comme celui-là. Il y a quelque chose d’assez forain, au sens noble du mot, qui rend la musique du Grio très joyeuse. Est-ce que vous faites attention à cette sorte de générosité foraine des choses, qui part donner de l’énergie à celui qui écoute en face ? A.L. : On n’y pense pas avant mais c’est vrai que c’est bien quand c’est là. C’est vrai aussi qu’il y a l’Impérial Orphéon où on fait ce bal qui est vraiment là-dedans et où les concerts sont souvent assez généreux. Vous le disiez, la tournée commence à l’automne. Là, on est au mois de mai, c’est loin l’automne. Il peut se passer des milliards de choses. A.L. : Quand on ne se voit pas, je pense que chacun a des moments où il peut réfléchir à ce projet et le faire mûrir. Les moments où on se retrouve, et pas seulement pour les musiciens, c’est jamais simple d’arriver à se retrouver. Après, il y a pas mal de boulot entre les concerts pour que tout cela existe. Il y a donc une forme de quotidien. F.R. : Et c’est là où on est contents d’être invités. A.L. : Mais vous n’êtes pas des invités, vous êtes dans le groupe [rires]. L’idéal serait de jouer tous les soirs mais il paraît que c’est difficile [rires]. Mais en réalité, le temps passe vite donc octobre, c’est demain. Dans ses notes sur votre groupe, Mathieu Durand parle de spiritual jazz. Il est où le spirituel dans le Grio ? A.L. : Il est dans l’amour, le respect et l’imagination propre à notre lien avec la musique. Après, on n’est pas du tout dans une discussion quant à la spiritualité de chacun, ça c’est certain. Pas sûr. La musique populaire d’un côté, avec son énergie, sa vitesse, sa nostalgie aussi, comme dans Esperanza. Les contours acoustiques du morceau prolongent l’imaginaire de la salle enfumée et des corps unis face à la musique. Avant tout, c’est cette légèreté de l’être qui frappe, la réflexivité du musicien qui n’a jamais renié ses origines. Sur l’autre bord, le jazz. Le souffle et l’utilisation de la flûte rythmique, percussive de Joce Miennel ; la guitare électrique de Pierre Durand et les mimiques rock qui viennent trancher ce que pourrait être le conformisme d’un tel trio. L’élasticité des musiciens et l’absence de rythmique convertissent la souplesse du trois temps dans des mélodies inspirées des continents sud-américain et africain. Toujours, ce rappel incessant, ce retour enivrant, cette obession du thème propre aux vieilles chansons populaires… Pas si perdu que ça, le petit bal. Didier Ithursarry : Atea, c’est un mot de mes racines basques qui signifie « la porte ». Une porte vers l’ailleurs mais aussi une porte vers soi et l’intimité. Mon intimité. C’est aussi une invitation à traverser cette porte. Cette symbolique correspondait au répertoire de ce projet. Dans ta formation, tu fais le choix de ne pas avoir d’instrument rythmique. DI : Je voulais quelque chose de plus roots et de plus fragile qu’un quartet de jazz au sens classique. Avec cette formule, Joce Mienniel est aux flûtes et Pierre Durand à la guitare électrique – et non acoustique, pour le côté blues et terrien. Je suis à l’accordéon et j’ai réussi à trouver une fragilité. Il y a plus de respiration, plus de surprises et plus d’échanges entre nous. On est tout à la fois, mélodistes-chanteurs et rythmiciens. Pourquoi as-tu réuni ces deux musiciens ? DI : La musique que nous jouons est axée sur la danse et sur des choses que je m’étais refusées jusqu’alors : aller flirter avec le répertoire brésilien et africain. Je crois que Joce et Pierre sont tous les deux dans cette curiosité aussi. Nos projets respectifs sont très différents, mais je trouve que le fond commun fonctionne et que ça valait le coup de nous rassembler. Des influences particulières ? DI : Je viens de la musique populaire. Toute ma jeunesse, au Pays basque, j’ai joué de la musique traditionnelle à l’accordéon mais aussi de la musique de danse. J’ai fait danser toutes les grands-mères du coin [rires]. Cependant, j’avais envie d’ailleurs. Cela a été permis par la rencontre avec Claude Barthélémy. Je me suis retrouvé du jour au lendemain dans son Orchestre National de Jazz ! Revenons à ton album. Dessus, il y a un morceau-fleuve, c’est Forró. DI : Le forró, c’est une danse brésilienne. Le thème principal m’a été apporté par les musiciens brésiliens que j’écoute encore comme Hermeteo Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, Sivuca, tous figures emblématiques de la musique brésilienne. Je suis attentif aux accordéonistes surtout. Puis, j’ai mélangé beaucoup de choses : un air traditionnel basque, un hommage à ma mère, une ballade, de la danse. Il y a un autre titre, Mali. D’où t’est-il venu ? DI : Tout est parti d’une rythmique, vraisemblablement inspirée des disques de musique africaine que j’ai pu écouter. J’aurais pu aller plus loin dans le titre de ces morceaux mais ce furent les premiers qui me sont venus à l’esprit. J’étais un peu enclin à changer par la suite. Comment composes-tu pour ce projet ? DI : Je suis inspiré par ce qui m’entoure : les humeurs, les choses que je vois et que j’entends, les musiciens avec qui je joue. Souvent, ce sont des bouts d’idées que je note par-ci, par-là, pour y revenir un peu plus tard. Je cherche une histoire la plupart du temps : sur Sherlock, j’imaginais bien Holmes rencontrant les Beatles. J’ai donc écrit un truc qui passe d’un univers à l’autre. C’est pour cela que mes morceaux sont assez longs, ils contiennent une certaine dramaturgie. Un autre album en préparation ? DI : Pour le moment, pas avec cette formation. Quand j’ai l’occasion de faire de nouvelles choses, j’ai envie d’aller ailleurs – ce n’est peut-être pas une si bonne chose [rires]. Il faut déjà que la musique vienne : j’attends d’avoir de la matière dans le tiroir. C’est à ce moment-là que tout se déclenche.
