En Amérique, dans les années 90, chaque ville avait sa scène hip-hop. Une identité sonore qui s’exposait du sud au nord, de l’est à l’ouest. Chaque mois, on met le nez dans une chanson de rap ou sur un disque qui illustre à merveille ce principe. Mais c’est où, Oakland ?
Facile pour celles ou ceux qui ont la carte de Californie aimantée sur le frigo : Oakland se situe à l’est de San Francisco, qu’on peut rejoindre par le Bay Bridge. 440.000 habitants au compteur et une bien mauvaise réput’ en raison de son taux de criminalité, Oakland s’en tire malgré tout grâce à ses équipes de sport (notamment les Warriors de Stephen Curry au basket) et son incroyable scène rap. Vous vous rappelez forcément de Luniz avec leur tubissime I Got 5 On It… Eh ben ça vient d’Oakland pardi ! À part ça, Oakland a vu naître le Black Panther Party, et est jumelée entre autres avec Agadir au Maroc et Livourne en Italie.

Qui est ce monsieur ?
Le merveilleux Anthony ‘Ant’ Banks est peut-être l’un des producteurs les plus sous-cotés de cet âge d’or du rap WestCoast dans les 90’s. Également rappeur, il compte plusieurs gros calibres à son actif dont le bijou The Big Badass, sorti en 1994 et sur lequel on retrouve la crème du rap qui fleure bon la Bay area : Too Short, Boots Riley, Rappin’ Ron, Goldy…

Est-ce que ça donne envie d’aimer ?
Ant Bank était une source d’inspiration pour les Daft Punk époque Homework, ces derniers le remerciant dans le livret de leur premier album. Alors oui, ça donne clairement envie d’aimer. Le producteur et rappeur d’Oakland a grandi en écoutant George Clinton, Parliament ou The Gap Band, et ça s’entend dans sa musique infusée aux guitares funky. Daft Punk / Ant Banks, le crossover est torride.

Pourquoi c’est bien tout ça ?
Sur The Big Badass, titre éponyme et introductif de cet album, Ant Banks pose les fondations de ce qui fera sa signature : une bassline grassouillette, des riffs de guitare hyper funky et des claviers qui sifflent. Cinq minutes de ce que les gens sérieux appelleraient « du gros son », au rythme un peu lent et ponctuées de quelques vulgaires « biaaatch ». Une musique qui s’écoute en retournant les chipos en plein mois d’août.
