En Amérique, dans les années 90, chaque ville avait sa scène hip-hop. Une identité sonore qui s’exposait du sud au nord, de l’est à l’ouest. Chaque mois, on met le nez dans une chanson de rap ou sur un disque qui illustre à merveille ce principe. Pour ce treizième épisode de Rap Ville, on plonge avec Doomsday Productions dans la cité du vice : Las Vegas.

Qui sont ces gens ?
Doomsday Productions est composé de 3 petites gueules sympathiques : Eklypss, Pit et Playboy 7. Doomsday signifiant le jour du mauvais sort, de l’apocalypse, ou tout bonnement de la fin du monde, on est ici dans une démarche assez lugubre et sombre au niveau de l’univers musical. Pour celles et ceux qui n’auraient pas vu les appels de phare, des titres comme Redrum, Pray 4 Me, Embrace the darkness ou Sick ‘em devraient vous poser l’ambiance.

L’État du Nevada, collé à l’Est de la Californie, est rempli de zones désertiques. Sa capitale, Las Vegas, est célèbre pour ses casinos et autres divertissements en tout genre. La ville, fondée en 1855 par les mormons, compte aujourd’hui plus de 600.000 habitants. Temple du shopping, ville jumelée avec Phuket en Thaïlande, ‘LV’ a également vu naître le joueur de tennis André Agassi. Petite subtilité : les 3 larrons de Doomsday Productions viennent de North Las Vegas, petite bourgade flanquée au nord qui devait manquer d’imagination lors du choix de son nom.

Est-ce que ça fait peur ?
Un max. Sérieusement, regardez-moi ces tronches et ces pochettes ! Visuellement, les gars étaient au top du darkside chelou avec les croix dessinées un peu partout, des rituels d’incantation en photo sur fond de forte consommation d’opiacés. Musicalement, ça tapait fort avec des clavecins humides, des voix d’outre-tombe et des boîtes à rythmes jouées uptempo, un peu à la manière de Filthro, l’introduction folle de leur troisième album Filthy sorti en 1999. D’ailleurs, le groupe a toujours soigné ses morceaux introductifs dans ses albums, ce qui à mon sens est une très belle qualité.

Pourquoi c’est bien tout ça ?
Parce qu’avec un cachet unique, un son tiraillé entre l’ouest (via les connexions avec Brotha Lynch Hung de Sacramento) et le sud, une identité à la fois métallique et fusion, Doomsday Productions aura réussi à marquer les 90’s du rap indé alors que le groupe n’affichait pas le label Los Angeles ou New York dans sa bio, ce qui est plutôt pas mal. Et puis, parce que c’est cool de se faire un peu peur par les temps qui courent, pas vrai ? Avant d’anticiper la fin du monde.
