Mais c’est où, Chicago ?
Troisième ville des États-Unis, plus grosse métropole du midwest, flanquée sur la rive sud-ouest du lac Michigan, Chicago affiche 2,7 millions d’habitants et s’étend sur 600 bornes. Un mastodonte économique et culturel qui a aujourd’hui fait oublier son surnom de « capitale du crime » hérité de la prohibition dans les années 20.

Pourquoi on en parle au juste ?
Chi-Town a toujours été une place forte abreuvant l’industrie du rap d’un bon paquets de talentueux artistes depuis les 90’s. De Common ou Da Brat à Chance The Rapper ou Lupe Fiasco, en passant plus récemment par des gens comme Chief Keef ou Lil Durk… La ville champignon a aussi vu grandir Ye, le « one and only » Kanye West dont on peut découvrir l’ascension acharnée et ambitieuse dans l’excellent documentaire Jeen-Yuhs actuellement sur Netflix, et dans lequel on entrevoit furtivement une autre pierre précieuse de Chicago : le rappeur Twista.

Qui est ce monsieur ?
Originaire de West Garfield Park, dans l’ouest de Chi-Town, Carl Terrell Mitchell alias Twista est le monsieur qui rappe très vite sur Slow Jamz de Kanye West avec Jamie Foxx. Quelques années plus tôt, en 1997, il larguera la bombe Adrenaline Rush au synthé inquiétant et aux samples mystiques en featuring avec Young Buk, autre chicagoan à la voix d’outre-tombe. Le succès commercial arrivera finalement en 2004 avec l’album Kamikaze. Mérité.

Est-ce que ça va vite ?
Oh, oui, vraiment très vite. Le fast flow de Twista est sa signature : les médias font des top 10 de ses apparitions les plus folles et le boy relève des défis de vitesse sur Internet un peu trop facilement. Twista, un garçon qui « goes really hard », comme on dit outre-Atlantique. Rapide et surtout précis, un peu comme Steve Kerr, le très adroit ailier et marqueur à trois points des Chicago Bulls, période dorée.

C’est vraiment bien tout ça ?
Évidemment. Chicago n’avait pas vraiment une patte claire et identifiable dans les années 90, certains quartiers de la ville étant plutôt hardcore quand d’autres proposaient des choses plus « conscientes » et politiques, à l’image de Common ou Twista. Les années 2010 verront débarquer la drill, sous-genre très populaire à l’imagerie violente sur fond d’autotune et de boites à rythmes TR-808. Ou comment le son d’une ville fait la bascule au fil des années.
