Urgent, funny or furiously humble. Let’s agree that punchlines and other militant gimmicks always rumble here and there for a long time now. And that’s fine. Free Jazz for the People! Has just joined the troops. This brand new album by the Healing Orchestra led by Paul Wacrenier was recorded in January and October 2020, beyond the Covid crisis and with the help of Sons d’hiver festival and the Petit Faucheux club in Tours (France). Between these two milestones, the orchestra goes beyond its own limits. Boosting the native principles of Free Jazz, the pianist makes the choice of a resource music, an egalitarian music, cousin of the Liberation Orchestra of Charlie Haden and Carla Bley. But well beyond a French reconstitution of the great ensemble, the Healing imposes itself elsewhere. Of course the titles of the tracks let us see common preoccupations, Fraternity or Confluences, of course a cover like the one of L’Estaca, libertarian Catalan hymn written by Lluis Llach, can evoke the Segadors of the Liberation. But the struggles are made of junctions and transversalities, we know it. That’s all there is to it. Wacrenier and his Healing obviously establish personal free barricades. Battling Soul of CM, tracks a battling Mingus, Spirit Of Mal has a romantic and emaciated blues look dedidacted to Waldron. The rest of the instrumental masses is impressive of mastery and lightness. Of freedom and pleasure to play, and the presence of Sylvain Kassap, historical troublemaker as a guest here, does not take anything away from the happiness of this record. Devil is thrilling here, here rumbles Angels.
