Sur Laid Made, avant dernière piste du disque sorti en 1995 chez Dogday Records, on est bien calé en pilotage automatique sur l’autoroute du chill, un cocktail sucré à portée de main. Aux manettes de cet instrumental, les darons de producteurs Chill Black et Mr. Laid, présents sur tout l’album. Les claviers sont chauds, la ligne de basse bien rebondie, on n’est vraiment pas loin du délicieux Summer Madness de Kool & The Gang. Qui sont ces gens ?Derrick Reed et Quinton Morris alias aka Dig et Quint forment le duo U.D.I. (pour Under Da Influence). À ne pas confondre donc avec le parti de centre droit de François Sauvadet et Jean-Louis Borloo. À part ça, U.D.I., c’est pas les gars les plus connus de Frisco, mais les puristes vous diront qu’ils étaient très très forts, aux côtés de leurs petits potes 11-5 et Cold World Hustlers dont on vous recommande aussi chaudement les disques. Pourquoi c’est bien tout ça ?Comme dirait cet auditeur, il y a 3 ans, sur Youtube : « Listening to this jam alway relaxes me ». Au final, U.D.I. se positionne dans la plus pure tradition de la mobb music chère à San Francisco. Welcome to Cleveland, baby. Mais c’est où, Cleveland ?Ville portuaire située sur la rive sud du lac Erié, Cleveland aka C-Town est surnommée « la ville foret » et compte près de 400.000 habitants. Berceau du syndicalisme à l’américaine avec son passé industriel important, Cleveland est aujourd’hui un des rares bastion démocrate de l’Ohio qui, lui, est un état traditionnellement pro-républicain. Sur No Surrender, sorti en 1994, il est question du manque d’affection du groupe pour les officiers de Police. Sur Tha Crossroads, en 1996, on célèbre les morts. Au départ, la chanson devait rendre hommage à Wally Laird III, mentor du groupe. Mais le décès tragique d’Eazy-E, en 1995, a amené les Bone Thugs à réécrire le titre. Enfin, sur Notorious Thugs, extrait de Life After Death (1997), on est sur un gros dessert poire chocolat. La réunion des héros : Notorious BIG et Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Trois notes de clavier, un premier couplet iconique de Biggie et les gars de Cleveland qui fument le beat, tour à tour. Qui sont ces gens ?Ils sont 5 : Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone, Wish Bone et Flesh-N-Bone. Ils aiment beaucoup représenter leur hood, au croisement de deux rues : St. Clair et East 99th street. Cette dernière allant même jusqu’à donner son nom à l’album culte du groupe sorti en 1995, E. 1999 Eternal. À l’époque, la grande réussite du groupe (et du label Ruthless) aura été de capter une audience plus large que celle du gangsta rap classique, où il était question uniquement de flingue, de deal et de beats stridents. Les sons parfois plus doux et la capacité des membres du groupe à chantonner séduiront notamment les filles, qui s’intéresseront au rap par ce biais. Pourquoi c’est bien tout ça ?Déjà parce que ça rappe très, très bien. Vite et fort. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony a été précurseur dans ce qu’on appellera plus tard le fast flow, au même titre que certains rappeurs du sud des États-Unis. Chacun des larrons sait aussi chanter, ce qui amènera une vibe câline aux différents disques. Et puis, c’était la belle époque des groupes de rap, on avait tous notre petit chouchou. Moi, c’était Bizzy Bone, parce qu’il était clairement un peu fou. Et pour son couplet démoniaque sur Thuggish Ruggish Bone.
