Quel est le sens, aujourd’hui, de jouer de la jug music ? La première résidence de cette création accompagnée par Pointbreak pourrait laisser songeur à ce sujet. La jug a ses origines stylistiques, africaines-américaines, au Tennesse et au Kentucky. Les blancs-américains la jouent aussi. Quant aux Old Ma Crackers, musiciens du cru et du jour, ce qu’ils y apportent, c’est du bagage perso : de vieux rags, l’esprit du rock, la culture du blues et l’instrumentarium en recherche.
Un des morceaux du programme de résidence est Just Because, chanson nostalgique de cow-boy solitaire, alternant riffs de mandoline, traits de banjo, motifs à la cruche et couplets polyphoniques. Version de référence du groupe ? Celle des Lone Star Cow-Boys, quartet de cow-boys blancs engagés par la firme phonographique Decca de 1929 à 1937. Chez les Crackers, Just Because devient potache et se modernise progressivement, stompée par une valise de fortune dans un esprit rock alternatif. Pour le répertoire des rags, les Crackers ont choisi Raggedy Rag. Découvert par Selma Namata Doyen lors de sa formation en percussions d’orchestre puis retravaillé ici, ensemble. En doublant le thème du xylophone d’une contrebassine et de voix chantant ‘yaourt’, Raggedy Rag se réconcilie avec son passé. Dernier morceau travaillé hier, What Makes My Baby Cry. Première version des Five Harmaniacs adorée du quartet, ainsi que la partie chantée de la version des Tight Like That, qui sonnerait aujourd’hui presque house. Notre version sera une version hybride, fidèle au statut de petit bâtard de la jug music, canaille née des passions du blues, du folk, du jazz avec les bouibouis américains.

Les Old Ma Crackers, un jug band dijonnais accompagné par PointBreak, poursuivaient, en janvier, avec cette résidence, leurs explorations musicales, basées notamment sur les travaux de recherche de son créateur, Lucas Le Texier.
