L’autre face du jazz anglais. Actuel ? Oui. Moderne ? Oui. Jungle ? Ah, non déso. Enfin presque pas. De l’ouverture de Bokeh, calée tout doux entre Terry Riley et l’acid jazz, au proto-rock de Ghosts, le territoire de Kansas Smitty’s est vaste. Bien plus que les Etats-Unis dont le Kansas est une pièce du puzzle. Kansas où le combo briton mené par un italo-américano-saxalto n’a jamais mis les pieds. We’re not in the Kansas anymore, chantonnait Dorothy à Toto tapant du pied dans le Magicien d’Oz. En route vers l’inconnu et au-delà complèterait Buzz l’éclair. We’re not in the Kansas anymore, c’est aussi le titre de ce disque en forme de compendium parfait. C’est anglais, les mélanges en grand forme parlent d’eux-mêmes. C’est moderne, la tradition est malmenée et pourtant reconnaissable entre mille autres sacro-saintetés. C’est fascinant surtout. Enjôleur comme une petite gueule d’amour à la sortie d’un bar, les 9 titres balayent la carte et le territoire d’une revers de la main, retraçant d’autres lignes de dérives, du broken-beat ou blues touareg, du jazz de bordel à la classe de Grand Hôtel. On n’est peut-être plus ou pas au Kansas, mais on est carrément bien dans un salon-club personnalisé avec le soin le plus précieux. Hors du monde et au cœur du monde.
