Hold on, cosmonaut. ‘Hold Steady’, space is the place. Space ? Yep, right where the Zerolex Trio is coming from its base. Landing, here are the vast spheres of jazz, opening the airlock, here is ‘Hold Steady’. No reason to be afraid. ‘Hold Steady’ is a quasi-cult tribute to the pharaoh of jazz with a celestial personality, Sun Ra. Unheard of and therefore surprising. Infinite, therefore fascinating. And in this stellar re-reading, the three thieves of Zerolex take Napoleon Maddox on board. Symbolic. An African-American emcee with a flow as fast as a shuttle, Maddox melts his voice with saturnian accents into the pitchy choruses and vocal samples of Sun Ra. ‘Hold Steady’ is therefore a family affair. Of heart and music. For the latter, we’re on the trio’s soft and familiar ground. Acidic intro and fearsome mid-tempo. Sax set to the shine and bass screwed into the knees. It’s good. The brand is respected. It floats, it tripes perfectly. We’re on the extension of ‘Temple’ and ‘Nectar’, also released by BMM Records. There is all the art of syncretism of Zerolex, his humble culture and fierce love of brotherhood. Here the voices add a consoling happiness. It’s good, really. And even a little more when Marc Melià turns on his synthesizers for a more ethereal but no less stubborn remixed version. Right in the face, the shot of this double starred single. Enough to hold on, for a while yet.

Atterrissage, voici les vastes sphères du jazz, ouverture de sas, voici donc Hold Steady. Peur de rien. Hold Steady est un hommage quasi-culte au pharaon du jazz à la personnalité céleste, Sun Ra. Inouï donc étonnant. Infini donc fascinant. Et dans cette relecture stellaire, les trois larrons de Zerolex embarquent Napoleon Maddox. Symbolique. Emcee africain-américain au flow aussi rapide qu’une navette, Maddox fond sa voix aux accents saturniens dans les choeurs pitchés et les samples vocaux de Sun Ra. Hold Steady est donc une histoire de famille. De cœur et de musique. Pour cette dernière, on est sur le terrain, meuble et familier, du trio. Intro acide et mid-tempo redoutable. Sax calé sur les brillances et basse vissée dans les genoux. C’est bon. La marque est respectée. Ça flotte, ça tripe parfait. On est sur le prolongement du Temple et du Nectar sortis eux aussi chez BMM Records. Il y a tout l’art de syncrétisme de Zerolex, sa culture humble et fédératrice. Ici les voix ajoutent un bonheur consolateur. C’est bon, vraiment. Et même un peu plus quand Marc Melià allume ses synthétiseurs pour une version remixée plus éthérée mais pas moins têtue. En pleine tête même, le shot de ce double simple étoilé. De quoi tenir bon, pour quelques temps encore.
