Comment peut-on être aussi nébuleux dans sa biographie et si précis dans ses riffs. Avec des échos de tonneau, de la verve de griot boueux et une force d’hypnose à vous ramollir le bulbe ad vitam. Mais qui pourra dire, sans se planter, ce qu’à vécu l’homme ? Celui qu’on affuble de sobriquets à boogie, d’honneurs mythologiques ou de l’élégance des hobo américains. Hors du Boom Boom et du Bang Bang, le livre d’Olivier Renault replace quelques endroits sur la carte. Du passage relax-master dans l’écurie jazz Impulse! à la refonte inlassable des tubes vendeurs, des claques prises par le rookie à Détroit à la descendance assumée, blanche et européenne. Ce livre, balancé comme un hook de Hooker, génialement incomplet mais profond et sournois comme le Mississippi, est vivant. Non, vivace plutôt. Parfait pour réchauffer décembre.
